MAIL ACCOUNTS FOR EVERYONE! ============================= I recently installed the qmail SMTP server, Courier POP3/IMAP, and the Horde webmail/personal information system on peltkore.net. This means, everyone has email now! To activate your email account, login via ssh, make sure you are in your home directory, and type 'maildirmake .maildir' and hit enter. Then, you have one of three ways of sending and receiving email: USE WEBMAIL ------------- Simply go to https://peltkore.net/mail and login using your regular peltkore.net username and password. Remember to use "https://" instead of "http://" for maximum security. This option requires no configuration and is the easiest choice for those who break out in hives when the word "configuration" is mentioned. If you choose this email choice, you can stop reading this document :) USE A GUI EMAIL CLIENT ------------------------ Graphical User Interface (GUI) -based clients include Mozilla Thunderbird (my personal fave) and Microsoft Outlook (UGH!). To setup your mail client, read the "MAIL SETTINGS" section below. USE A CLI EMAIL CLIENT ------------------------ You may use a command line email client, such as pine or mutt (both are installed on the server). Usually only advanced users (a.k.a. geeks) use CLI email clients. Again, follow the "MAIL SETTINGS" section below. MAIL SETTINGS --------------- INCOMING POP SERVER (USE SSL): peltkore.net (port 995) INCOMING IMAP SERVER (USE SSL): peltkore.net (port 993) OUTGOING SMTP SERVER: If you are using a CLI mail client from the command line at peltkore.net, use localhost. If you are using a mail client from your own machine, use your ISP's outgoing SMTP server. Your email address is username@peltkore.net. Note that you can use either POP, IMAP, or both. POP downloads the mail onto your local machine for viewing. IMAP leaves a copy of the mail on the server, so that you can read through your email from any computer. Select which ever retrieval method you prefer. Also, there is no diskspace limit for your email, but be sure to keep it under 1 GB in order to be fair to the other users. WEB APPLICATIONS THAT USE EMAIL --------------------------------- The path to sendmail is /var/qmail/bin/sendmail.
